If you're new to The Makings of Me series, read the intro below.

I like beginnings. The beginning of the day, the beginning of the week, the month, the year… There’s something about the beginning that seems so fresh and opportunistic. It’s like you get a clean slate to start whatever you want to start. A diet, an exercise program, a new perspective, a new you.

I mentioned in a previous post that September is my birthday month and so, it dawned on me that this is the beginning of a new year of life for me. I never viewed my birthday that way before. (I’m telling you…it’s something about the 30s!)I usually only considered January 1, the start of the new year, but really, each birthday signifies a new year of life for that individual. Isn’t that nice!? A beginning!

For the next 12 months, I’ll be taking strides and making efforts to improve this year of life for me. I’ll be doing the things I’ve thought about doing but never followed through on. I’ll be doing the things I know I should do, but don’t. I’ll be intentionally working towards doing and being better in areas of my life that I feel need improvement.

Your birthday may be far off, but really, there’s no time like the present to live the life you want to live. Don’t keep waiting if you’ve felt a tug to do and be a better you! Won’t you join me? Share any things you’re working on and your goals towards self improvement in the comments below. This is exciting! This is the beginning of a new you, and a new me!

Month 2: Mission 2- Eat right!

I occasionally shop at Whole Foods and each time I do, I feel encouraged and empowered to eat healthy. Maybe it’s seeing all the other people looking for the freshest fruit and filling their carts with avocados and organic spinach. Maybe it’s because Whole Foods is not near my house so each trip I take there is like an adventure of its own with different sites, sounds, and clientele than the many Food Lions in my neck of the woods. Either way, something about that environment, where there’s a standard for what people are willing to purchase and consume, makes me care more about what I eat and what I prepare for my family.

This month, I’m focusing on food and figuring out how I can make better choices. Combining my giant sweet tooth with my shameful ability overeat, I could easily have a major problem on my hands. But at some point, when you know better and you consistently don’t do better, you’re asking for trouble. I just have to do better.

My plan for doing better includes keeping a food diary and planning my meals very specifically. I’m not giving up any food groups or saying I won’t eat sugar, because that’s just a lie, but I am saying that there’s no reason to eat 5 slices of pizza and 8 chocolate chip cookies just because it’s available. I guess making better food choices has a lot to do with showing self control and restraint too!

What guidelines do you follow for eating a balanced diet? Is your current diet a concern for you at all?

Month 1 update: I am back on the Jillian Michael's bandwagon! Yay!

  1. That is great that you are back to doing Jillian Michael's......keep it up.....I definitely have a few sweet teeth in my mouth and I overeat at times too....just recently I ate an entire box of reese pieces and the serving size clearly said it was for three people...smh...I try my best to eat healthy .....being that my schedule doesn't allow me to show off in the kitchen....I tend to eat a lot of healthy choice and lean cuisine frozen dinners....one for lunch and one dinner....it's a great way to save money while eating healthy.....I wish I had a cook to prepare me real meals...maybe you should come and visit me a few times....but I'm doing the best I can....I do need to reflect and break a few bad habits...that I could regret in the long run....for example eating mozzarella sticks once a week or a chicken philly cheesesteak once/twice a week....not eating enough fresh fruits....yea you get the picture....I can do better and I need to do better....even with exercising
